URBANCE The Pilot Episode from Steambot on Vimeo.

Urbance was initially conceived over three years ago by Steamboat Studios, a creative agency based in Canada. Steamboat launched a successful kickstarter campaign in 2014 where they raised $229,301 CAD (which is about $175,000 US) to produce an animated pilot. Following the success of their campaign they spent 9months working on the project collaborating with different studios and creative agencies across the world. The result is a visually stunning animated pilot you can watch now.

My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians (TMA)

My Child ‘Teenage Mutant Azanians’ – Trailer (R18) from Peter Heaney / Director on Vimeo.

When an atomic explosion creates human animal hybrid mutants, these creatures are shunned by society and exiled to the land of Azania. It is here that Professor Afronaut founds the Nelson Mandela School for Gifted Mutants. If at this point you’re thinking African X-Men, I have bad (or maybe good) news for you, TNA is nothing of the sorts. Instead it is a sex crazed, wildly violent medley of profanity is more to the tone of South Park meets Animal Farm meets Rick and Morty.

My Child: Teenage Mutant Azanians from H. Gagnon Distribution Inc. on Vimeo.

Created by South African Director Nick Wilson, TMA was initially self funded with the pilot having debuted in September, 2014 on Vimeo. The show was an instant hit and before long it was picked up by Comedy Central Africa. TMA became Africa’s animated comedy series when it premiered on December 5th last year. If there is a line TMA crosses it and does not apologise so this is definitely not a show for the easily offended. However, if you’re up for a laugh and are willing to temporarily suspend your politically correct principles then TMA will not disappoint (only offend).

Bilal: A legend Breaks Free

Bilal is a 3D animated film produced by Barajoun Entertainment, a Dubai based studio. The movie is based on the life of Bilal ibn Rabah, a legendary figure in Islamic history. In the film Bilal and his sister, Ghufaira are abducted as children and forced into slavery. Thrown in a world corrupted by greed and injustice, Bilal realises that he must choose his own fate, and find the courage to rebel against injustice.

Compared to the other projects on this list Bilal boasts the highest production value with a budget of approximately 30 million dollars. The film also stars some high profile actors with Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje playing the titular character and Ian McShane taking up the role of the villain. Finally as Barajoun’s first feature length film, there is plenty riding on Bilal’s commercial success. Luckily early reviews have been very positive so we’re hopeful ahead of the film’s release this fall.
